monthly cultural festival at the french institute in port-au-prince

Introducing Nadege Dugravil, one of Haiti’s rising star , who was among other Haitian artists to pay tribute to the memory of ToTo Bissainthe at the french Institute. Following several roles in theater including a national tour with the Dram’ Art compagny, Nadege becomes a member of the group Nous.

-It is said that if the Caribbean had a heart, Haiti would be one of the countries in the basin contending for it. The warmth of its people, the sun, the landscape and the music all combine to make Haiti a legendary place.

   

 

First Haitian Opera

Well known Haitian writer Rassoul Labuchin, Author of a number of scenarios and film wrote the libretto for the first Haitian opera entitled Le Mariage Linglinsou which was presented to the public last june in Port-au-prince Haiti . The opera is a love story about a mother who loses her son to Haiti’s violence. Opera is not new to Haiti, in the eighteenth century classical music was very popular and concert were held often.

The saut d'eau water fall festival

The Saut D’eau water fall is located in Mirebalais, roughly 40 miles from port-au-prince Haiti. [A 4 wheel drive vehicle is required to take the 3 hr trip] It is a well known site, famous for its voodoo celebrations. Legend has it that in the 1800’s an image of the Virgin Mary appeared near the water fall of Saut D’eau . Thousands of pilgrims make the trip every year, where they strip and submerge themselves in water. Some stand under the cascade and ask Erzuly [the spirit of love] for favors ranging from riches to better health. The ritual also involves leaving one’s old clothes behind in the water.
