Built at the bottom of an immense gulf on the caribbean sea, Jacmel is
a charming quiet city decorated with french colonia architecture. Its
name would come from a flibustier, Jacques Melot, thesis that its old
french orthography seems to accredit, Jacmel. Once, one of Haiti’s
wealthiest cities, Jacmel has considerable tourist assets. In addition
to its architecture and its environment of beaches and mountains,
Jacmel offers an abundant craft industry
After Haiti’s independence in 1804, the city takes share in the fight
of emancipation of Latin America. On March 12 1806, the precursor of
Venezuela independence Fransisco De Miranda creates in this bay the
horizontal flag of his country by adding to the yellow of Spain the
bands blue and red of the Haitian flag. In 1816 Jacmel accommodates the
liberator of Venezuela, Simon Bolivar, who will set out again loaded
with arms and ammunition, and accompanied by many Haitians volunteers.
